Are you interested in building more welcoming communities? Please consider Together Project, a MakeWay charitable initiative, as the beneficiary of your office or personal fundraising initiative.
About Us
Together Project’s mission is to connect volunteers with refugee newcomers to build stronger, more integrated communities in Canada. We make change in three interconnected ways: building newcomer social connections, supporting newcomer integration priorities, and amplifying community involvement in newcomer integration. Our Welcome Group Program matches groups of 3-5 volunteers with newly-arrived refugees for up to six months of social and integration support.
Why Our Work is Important
Studies have shown that when newcomers do not feel welcome in Canada, they are more likely to experience feelings of social isolation, which can make it harder to integrate and build a new sense of belonging. As Mary, a newcomer explains,
“We didn’t know anyone who could guide us and give helpful information. We couldn’t ask anyone for information about where to go. When we wanted something for myself, for my children, for my family– we didn’t have someone who could give us directions.”
The social support that Welcome Group volunteers provide is a significant and effective way to ease the newcomer’s journey. As Rahel, another newcomer explains,
“My Welcome Group played an incredible role in my transition here in Canada. The kind of support that I received ranged from helping me navigate the education system for my son, who is autistic, and also, the healthcare system, and overall Canadian culture.”
