I’m thrilled to share my experience as a volunteer with Together Project’s Welcome Group Program! From the very first moment, I felt excited to connect with my match and support a newcomer, just as others once supported me when I was starting my own journey in Canada. This experience has been full of learning, growth, and meaningful connections. Working closely with my supervisor, Ahmed, our match has taught me invaluable lessons about life, resilience, and the power of community.

1. How did you find out about Together Project’s Welcome Group Program? What made you volunteer with us?

I found the program on Together Project’s website. I wanted to support newcomers, just like others once supported me when I was starting out, and give back to the community that welcomed me.

2. How has your experience in the Welcome Group Program impacted you?

This experience has been amazing and very rewarding. I’ve learned so much from my match and grown as a volunteer, gaining patience, flexibility, and a deeper understanding of the challenges newcomers face.

3. How did it help you understand what challenges newcomers are facing?

Working closely with my match has shown me how difficult it can be to navigate a new country, from understanding systems to adapting to a new culture. It’s given me a real appreciation for their courage and strength.

4. What have the highlights been in your match so far?

I’m so happy with my match! My supervisor, Ahmed, is incredibly supportive, flexible, and always finds the best solutions. As a team, we’ve learned and grown together, and our match has taught us invaluable lessons about life, resilience, and hope.

5. You have asked for your match to be extended past 6 months; can you explain this for potential volunteers?

We requested an extension because our connection with our match has been so meaningful. Extending the match allows us to continue providing support, deepen our relationship, and keep learning from each other’s experiences.

6. You have been so helpful in finding more Spanish-speaking volunteers for our Welcome Group Program. Are there certain qualities or attributes that Spanish-speaking volunteers often bring to the table?

Spanish-speaking volunteers bring warmth, empathy, and understanding that make newcomers feel comfortable right away. They also offer practical language support and guidance, helping newcomers feel more confident in their daily lives.

7. What advice do you have for potential volunteers/newcomers participating in the Welcome Group Program?

Be open, patient, and ready to learn. Every match is unique, and the most meaningful connections come from genuine curiosity, respect, and a willingness to grow together.
