Job Title: Volunteer Coordinator

Anticipated Start Date: November 1, 2019

Location: 50 Carroll St, Toronto, Ontario

Job Type: Part-time (20 hours / week)

Salary range: $21,000 – $23,000 (commensurate with experience)

Position Overview

Together Project, a project on Tides Canada’s shared platform, connects refugee newcomers and Canadians to build stronger, more integrated communities. Our Welcome Group Program matches volunteers with newly arrived refugees for meaningful settlement and integration support.

The Volunteer Coordinator will support Together Project’s Co-Directors in the delivery of the Welcome Group Program. The Coordinator will serve as the main point of contact for volunteers interested or involved in the Welcome Group Program. They will coordinate community outreach in order to attract new volunteers, manage volunteer on-boarding, and support volunteer program participation.

Key Responsibility Areas

Assist the Co-Directors with volunteer coordination, which includes, but is not limited to:

  • Volunteer recruitment: seeking engaged and dynamic community members and encouraging them to participate in the Welcome Group Program.
  • Volunteer on-boarding: screening volunteer candidates, clarifying volunteer role, responsibilities and expectations, and answering questions about the Program.
  • Volunteer management: developing and maintaining Together Project’s volunteer database.

Assist with planning and executing training sessions, focus groups, and other events.

Supporting community outreach via social media.

Act as the main liaison between Together Project and its volunteer community, capturing its stories, emergent learning, and general progress.


General qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills required. Applicant should be comfortable meeting new people, conducting interviews in person and by phone, and communicating clearly and professionally.
  • Excellent organizational skills, especially with regards to scheduling and database management.
  • Experience in community outreach and volunteer management/coordination a major asset.
  • Advanced verbal and written knowledge of English required, proficiency in other languages is an asset.
  • Ability to work with a small, mission-driven team in a sensitive, respectful manner.
  • Experience in working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong work ethic; ability to multi-task and work independently.
  • Must provide a complete and current (within one year) Vulnerable Sector Check, or be willing to obtain one.


  • Post-secondary or graduate social science degree or related field (political science, international relations, humanities), and/or equivalent lived or professional experience.

Software experience and skills:

  • Proficiency with full Google Suite (e.g. Docs, Sheets, Drive), MS Office Suite, and social media platforms (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook).
  • Experience using SurveyMonkey and MailChimp is an asset.

Travel and schedule requirements:

  • Willingness to travel within the Greater Toronto Area. Access to a vehicle is an asset but not required.
  • Flexible schedule is an asset, in order to best facilitate meeting volunteers, which may at times be outside of regular working hours.
