The Story of a Welcome Group in Surrey, BC: “These volunteers were going above and beyond!”

When Simar, the Volunteer Coordinator at DIVERSEcity, matched an Afghan newcomer family with a Welcome Group, the family found ways to practice their English, nurture a young boy’s love of soccer, and reunite with loved ones.

Together Project Criteria

Together Project connects newcomers and volunteers to build stronger, more integrated communities. “Welcome Groups” consisting of 3-5 volunteers are matched with refugee newcomer households for a period of six months, during which they will provide dedicated social support addressing client-identified integration priorities.
